Poem: UnCivil War

Lips draw tight
In battle lines
Stretching across
Dinner tables
Where brother
Versus brother
Stares daggers
At the other
Contemplating
How long
There was no
Recognition of
Blood betraying
Blood in words
And beliefs
Twisting familiar
Circumstances
Into unrecognizable
Shapes
Like dirty napkins
Left on white linen
As a picked over
Dinner grows colder
Than the stares
And manners
Failed to bring
Civil discourse
To passions
About ideas
That are not
Relevant
To anyone
At this table

Inspired by Biden’s inauguration speech yesterday.
