They said your name was Cindy
And gave you a last name of Smith
Since your parents had surrendered
Your care to the good Christian nuns
At Saint Carlisle where they taught
You how to be a moral and upright

Poem: Struggle of Faith
In the dark I can see your light
Undimmed by your made spirit weary
From attempts at mind control
Through the images of a broken body
Hung up by nails and promises
Of salvation if you’d just believe
Poem: Things Lost
What is lost can never be saved
Is what they told her while kneeling
On achy knees before a dusty alter
Listening to damnation sermons
When everything is seen as a sin
No choice except to be a sinner
Being a saint was never an option
Poem: Vagrant Spirituality

We sat in the fire light of the burning refuge
Talking about sinning and salvation
What it feels like to bear the cross of expectation
And the freedom that comes from laying it down
