Poem: Modern People Modern Christmas

We consider ourselves modern humans
Disconnected from our backwards ways
Having left all of our superstitions behind
As we chant together ancient incantations
Hanging the fertility berries over the doors
To welcome in love by Aeneas’ grace
In the light of the portions of the Yule log
We will keep burning for twelve nights
Inviting in protection and luck into the home
In the hope that some magic elf will come
Leaving presents beneath our tree
Decorated with bright lights for Saturnalia
On the evening of Christ’s mass this year
