The stone skips smoothly Across the water's surface Sending out ripple after ripple From each place it kissed Along its path to the middle Of the river where it stopped Sinking slowly beneath waves To rest in the deep dark Weathering away in peace
A response to Whismy Gizmo‘s quadrille prompt at d’Verse using the word stone.

A stone “kissing” the water? Yes, please! I love this.

You have to make sure it spins enough to skip.

I really like “weathering away”, Tom… at first I thought it was “withering away” and then I thought… that doesn’t make sense… and I read it again.

Given my proclivity for proofing errors, it’s a justified response. But in this case I was picturing the waves slowly wearing it away to nothing.

It’s such a common childhood experience. I grew up on the shore, so used to skip oyster shells

Almost like a human life, we skip along, making some ripples before we sink and are gone.
