Poem: Plight of the Individual

All the coats scarves and mittens
Wrapped around shuddering
Shoulders can’t keep out the cold
Sinking into bones that ache
From simply existing day to day
Sleeping in doorways locked
Tight as hearts of the passerby
To the plight of a single person
Who means no more to them
Than another face in the crowd
All of humanity blurring together
Until the concept we shared
Of a collective personhood
Disappears into each individual
Standing on their own or falling
With no compassionate hands
To lift them back onto their feet
