Poem: Unpacking Old Things

There’s a lot here to unpack
Years of things put away
Pushed back into corners
Locked away in dark places
Meant never to see the light
Waiting patiently moldering
Growing silently seething
With a steady patience
That only things that live
Deep in the darkness have
Where strength grows
Readying to spring merciless
At an inopportune revealing
All the things you have fought
So hard to hide or destroy

Someday the time will come
To empty out those closest
Facing things you’ve hidden
From yourself for good reason
A test for maturity and wisdom
Letting them breathe to life
Only to smother them out
Allowing you to breathe
Freely For the first time
In an entire lifetime
