Spring smells mark the arrival Of warmer weather here Evaporating fresh rain from sidewalks As I’m walking by your house To see all the lights are turned out For the first time in years There was always a light burning Somewhere behind open windows Or closed tight curtains My thoughts turn to other times When the windows were all aglow Laughter coming from the windows From bad jokes and good fun Those times are gone now The lights gone out as you left Departed for destinations unknown Try as I might hold on You’re not coming back Leaving only memories To fill those dark windows I turn up my jacket to the cold Of a spring that won’t be coming With the warmth I need
